Do you season a Le Creuset cast iron skillet?

Michelle Sanchez   |   Member since 2018  |  10+ Answers Submitted  |  ✔ Verified

Le Creuset says seasoning is not required (unlike other cast iron pans like Lodge ), but seasoning the pan will form a better patina, which does improve the natural non-stick properties. As you said, the patina develops naturally, but if you don't want to wait, then you can help it along by seasoning it.

Accordingly, does enameled cast iron need to be seasoned?

Your enameled cast iron doesn't need to be completely seasoned like a traditional cast iron skillet. To season, use a paper towel to rub a light coating of neutral, high smoke-point oil (canola is a good option) on the edge, where the cast iron is exposed.

Furthermore, how do you keep food from sticking to Le Creuset? Problem with using a cooking spray is that you aren't supposed to spray onto a hot pan, but Rule #1 about keeping food from sticking is to add fat ONLY to a hot pan. Heat the pan, add your oil or grease, bring that to temperature and add your food.

Is enameled cast iron better than cast iron?

Food may stick when cooking with these pans. The enameled layer in these pans prevents the iron from absorbing into the food. These pans are typically more expensive than bare cast iron. Enameled cast iron does not hold up as well as bare cast iron.

Do you spray a cast iron skillet before cooking?

Oil your food: whereas with other pans, like stainless steel or non-stick, you'll squirt a little oil into the base of the pan before you cook, with cast iron (especially griddled cast iron), you're much better off brushing oil onto your meat or veggies before you cook them.

You should never use any pan higher than medium heat whether cast iron, enameled cast iron, stainless steel, or nonstick. It takes a little longer for cast iron to warm up because the material is so dense. And once the pan is hot, it keeps cooking long after the burner is off.

Aside from that, non-stick pans are often cheap and poorly made. Food does not heat evenly, handles quickly become wobbly, the non-stick coating peels off, etc. And being professionals, chefs know how to keep things from sticking. They're also double walled, so they heat evenly, without warping over high heat.
